China Heads Global Auto Industry Revival: 4 Stocks in Focus

The China auto market has finally risen from ashes. The auto sector in China had been battling a downturn since July 2018 owing to tighter emission standards, trade tensions, increasing popularity of ride-sharing platforms and sluggish economy. The coronavirus pandemic — originated in Wuhan — further added to the woes, as was evident from the biggest ever decline of around 80% year over year in February. However, with effective control of the virus, China is now at the forefront of global auto market recovery.

German Digital Ad Growth Will Stagnate amid Economic Turndown

No country will escape the coronavirus pandemic unscathed, and all around the world, local public health crises have led to substantial economic downturns. Germany has handled the unprecedented challenge better than most, and its industrial base has proven to be more resilient than many of its counterparts across the globe. But the country has not avoided substantial economic disruption, despite the competence of its public health governance.

The dominant vertical for digital ad spending in Germany has always been the retail industry, but auto has traditionally been the other big digital ad buyer. This makes sense given the auto-centric makeup of Germany’s industrial manufacturing economy. Beyond auto, the travel industry too has been a substantial digital advertiser in years past. Thus, auto’s dramatic 25.7% decline in digital ad spending, coupled with the unprecedented 38.7% drop in travel digital ad spend, explains the general stagnancy that Germany’s digital ad market will

Coronavirus latest: Germany’s population shrinks for first time in a decade

Martin Arnold in Frankfurt

Germany’s population shrank for the first time in a decade after the coronavirus pandemic triggered a sharp drop in immigration this year, intensifying a recent demographic slowdown.

The number of people living in Germany fell by 40,000 in the first six months of this year to 83.1m, which the federal statistics agency said on Tuesday was the first decline in the population of Europe’s largest economy since the second half of 2010.

The main cause of the drop in German inhabitants was a sharp drop in arrivals from other countries since the pandemic started in March.

In the first six months of the year, there was a 29 per cent decline in the number of immigrants arriving in Germany to 529,000, while those emigrating fell 22 per cent to 455,000.

That means Germany had net immigration of 74,000 people in the first half of this year

Accelerated job cuts in German auto industry

Barely a day goes by without a new announcement of cutbacks and job cuts in the auto industry in Germany. The coronavirus pandemic is being deliberately used to slash costs and increase profits.

Last Tuesday, Daimler CEO Ola Källenius announced at a conference with investors that the Mercedes auto division would reduce its fixed costs by more than a fifth by 2025 (compared to 2019) by cutting capacity and personnel costs.

Källenius made no effort to hide the reason behind the decision. The plan was to restore profits to double-digits by 2025. Even under unfavourable conditions, the company was aiming for a profit margin “in the mid to high single-digit percentage range.”

The cuts program, which was already announced in recent months, is expected to result in the loss of around 30,000 jobs worldwide, i.e., almost one in ten. While the

Lewis Hamilton Ties Michael Schumacher’s Wins Record in Germany

NÜRBURG, Germany (AP) — Even Lewis Hamilton once saw Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 wins as unbeatable. Now he’s matched it.

Schumacher’s son, Mick, presented Hamilton with one of his father’s old helmets after the British driver took a record-tying 91st win at the Eifel Grand Prix.

“Seeing his dominance, I don’t think anyone, and especially me, didn’t imagine that I’d be anywhere near Michael in terms of records so it’s an incredible honor and it’s going to take some time to get used to,” Hamilton said, adding that he used to choose Schumacher as his character when playing a video game.

Schumacher has required constant care since he sustained severe head injuries in an accident while skiing in 2013.

Hamilton took a big step closer to matching Schumacher’s record of seven titles, too, after his teammate Valtteri Bottas failed to finish with an engine problem. Hamilton now leads the
