U.S. wholesale prices jump third month in a row as travel costs climb

ECONOMIC REPORT

The numbers: U.S. wholesale costs rose sharply in September for the third month in a row, but the recent upturn largely reflected prices returning to normal after the economy reopened and not a sustained increase in inflation.

The producer price index jumped 0.4% last month, the government said Wednesday. Economists polled by MarketWatch had predicted a 0.2% advance.

Most of the increase last month in wholesale prices was tied to a partial rebound in the cost of hotel and travel-related services after more people ventured out toward the end of the summer. Businesses were forced to slash prices last spring when lockdown orders and fear of catching the virus kept most customers away.

Inflation in the U.S. was still quite tepid. Wholesale inflation has risen just 0.4% in the past year, marking the first positive reading in six months. Typically wholesale prices start to

  • Footage reveals what is thought to be South Korea’s largest dog meat auction
  • 200 dogs seen crammed into small cages while being sold to the highest bidder
  • Auction took place ahead of Bok Nal, at the height of summer, when the majority of the dog meat consumed in South Korea is eaten
  • Campaigners are urging South Korea to ban the market and close it for good

Undercover footage has revealed the distressing conditions suffered by hundreds of dogs inside what is thought to be South Korea’s largest dog meat auction house.

Investigators from US charity Lady Freethinker captured images from the Nakwon auction house, in the city of Namyangju, over the summer.

The footage was recorded ahead of Bok Nal, the hottest period of summer when most dog meat is traditionally eaten, when the auction house is at its busiest.

Lucid Motors prices its most affordable Air luxury EV

Lucid Motors promised a more affordable version of its Air luxury electric sedan, and now we know just how affordable that model will be. Kicking off from $77,400, the entry-level Air will rely on the US federal tax incentive for EVs to potentially bring its starting price down to $69,900.

In return you’ll get what Lucid expects to be 406 miles of range from the standard battery. As for power, there’ll be 480 horsepower, Lucid says; there’ll be a single motor configuration as well as a dual-motor option that adds all-wheel drive to the electric car.

Unveiled officially last month, the 2021 Lucid Air aims to take on Tesla with a high-style, high-performance electric-first drivetrain. Figuring that EV owners won’t be willing to compromise on either power or range, it’ll offer as much as 517 miles on a full charge. Lucid has also inked a deal with Electrify America in

Two teenage girls and driver, 21, killed after car hit tree ‘while overtaking at 90mph’

One friend, who was laying flowers at the scene, said: “I know Lucy who died and Nathan who was in the passenger seat.

“Nathan is hospital in Birmingham with a bleed on his brain. He’s having surgery because he’s also got a damaged spine.

“He [Josh] was going over 90mph and coming up behind another car. He overtook it and as he swerved back into the lane he lost control and went into the tree.

“I’m not sure why they were going that fast. I haven’t a clue. Some say there was an undercover police officer at the scene or there was another car behind that was trying to race them.”

The friend added: “Lucy never hurt anyone. She was a lovely girl. She had started a new job and was sorting her life out, but now she’s lost it.

“She had done accounting at college and started an apprenticeship.

KAR Global’s Data Science Team Has Been Tracking Retail Vehicle Sales

Last April and into May, car sales were looking bleak.

According to CNN, major automakers reported a “more than 30 percent drop in U.S. sales in the second quarter, the biggest plunge in sales since the Great Recession and the auto bankruptcies of 2009.” But as government stimulus checks began trickling in, wholesale business started picking up. And the data science team at KAR Global, a tech company that provides physical and digital wholesale marketplaces for buyers and sellers, noticed.

By mid-June, KAR tech professionals decided customers would benefit from the valuable buyer information they were seeing through proprietary company dashboards. So they made the internal data mapping buyer demand and excess seller inventory external-facing — in less than a week.

“We knew, for example, there was no buyer activity in the Northeast, based on the data from the retail side,” Vice President of Product Management & Data Services Joe
